Enrichment CCA

Sports Enrichment Programme

At Dunman High we are committed to giving students a wide and balanced education. In addition to their core CCAs, students will be able to choose from an array of enrichment programmes which will complement and enrich their stay at DHS.

The Enrichment Programme aims to add an exciting dimension to their education which will give them opportunities to explore new hobbies and interests and develop skills. The enrichment programme includes such options as:

  • Swimming
  • Tennis
  • Bowling
  • Weiqi
  • Xiangqi
  • International Chess

Weiqi

The DHS Weiqi Club is a brand new CCA, newly established in 2007. It was an initiative by our own students and Weiqi enthusiasts, in both Junior High and Senior High sections.

What is Weiqi?

Weiqi, also known as Go and Baduk, is an ancient strategic board game with countless benefits. It has been found to improve concentration, calculation, memory, thinking skills and judgment, just to name a few. We combine these with our love and passion for the game, to create a conducive environment for other people interested in Weiqi.

What do we do?

The Weiqi Club holds training sessions every Monday afternoon from 3 to 5.30 pm in the 1L classroom. During these trainings, we analyse games played by professional players, practise solving problems to sharpen our skills, and play with each other. The training sessions are carried out by our coach, Mr. Yang Jinhua, a 6-dan professional player and coach from the Singapore Weiqi Association.

We constantly challenge ourselves in the numerous competitions organised all year round. With at least 8 competitions a year, everyone will have a chance to participate, ensuring exciting and fruitful experiences for all.

What have we got?

Our members have garnered numerous accolades both inidividually and as teams. These include 3 rd place in the annual Qiuping Cup for secondary schoolsin 2007, and 3 rd place in the Pesta Sukan National Day Weiqi Competition in 2006.

Our members have even represented Singapore internationally in the 1 st Asia Amateur Baduk Championship, and in friendly matches between other countries like Japan and Thailand .

Is Weiqi the game in the manga and anime Hikaru no Go?

Yes, it is. And if you’re interested to find out more about it, feel free to join us at any training sessions, we’ll be more than pleased to help you. Here’s your chance to find the Hand of God for yourself!

Should I join the Weiqi Club?

Of course! Weiqi is not only a game – it is a journey to sharpen your mind and to get to know more friends. Experience for yourself not only the sweetness of victory, but also the bitterness of losing – and how to stand up after that. It’s life, on a 19x19 wooden board.

And the best thing? You don’t even have to know how to play! Just come with an open mind, and we’ll help you fill it up, and that’s a promise. Have a GO at it!

To find out more about the Weiqi Club, feel free to approach Cheng Mun Yi and Tan Ruijie of 5B, Kwek Suat Yee of 4J, or Mrs Koh Swee Ling.

The CCA is conducted in an outdoor, sheltered area on tiled floor. Although Taekwondo is ideally practised in an indoor facility (e.g. gymnasium) that includes wooden flooring, this is a temporary measure of the school due to insufficient facilities. Once Dunman High School moves to its new premises in two years’ time, there will be adequate facilities that are very suitable for proper Taekwondo training.

Taekwondo training is carried out every Monday and Friday, 3.00 – 5.00 pm. At all sessions, trainings start off with some stretching exercise to warm-up, followed by target kicks, pattern-training and finally warm-down exercises. The experience serves to enrich each student rather than preparing for serious competition. Although no one is spared in potentially receiving an occasional misdirected kick (fortunately generally at the hand), the students learn to stay alert and perfect their ‘aim’ at the same time.

Badminton

With the changes in our educational system, the approach adopted by different school to the rules and regulation of badminton have also changed. As a result, we faced some of the toughest challenges in the Pilot Pen Cup tournaments this year, and did not reach our expectations.

However, the players have put their heart and soul into their every training session. They have shown their determination and have built strong ties of friendship. As a team, we have improved tremendously; on the other hand, the achievements are transient. Only our spirit and our friendship will last forever.

Basketball

Basketball is not only a game that puts your physical fitness to the test, but also your perseverance and mental strength as well.

The cohesion and team spirit among the players are strengthened also through the friendly matches with other schools during June and December school holiday in addition to the regular twice-per-week training during school terms.

Under the encouragement by the dedicated coaches Mr Tan Siong Leng and Mr Tan Seng Kok, both boy and girl teams hold close to their hearts as they look forward to continue to strive for greater heights in the coming years.

Netball

Netball is a new CCA set up for the Senior High Section. Currently, it has 12 members, with training by an experienced coach, conducted twice weekly every Tuesday and Thursday. As this is a new CCA, the players put in a lot of effort in the hope of establishing it as a challenging yet interesting CCA for the future members of the club. The team believes that perseverance is the key to success and gives its very best during all training sessions and matches. In hope of improvement and to develop our competitiveness, we conduct friendly matches with other schools. Our team certainly looks forward to participating in future netball tournaments. Thus, we not only train physically, we also nurture our players to acquire sportsmanship.
